Leona's Story

January 2009: Well, first of all, though my name is Leona Dean (Duncan), everyone called me Dean except a few teachers. I have been going to the free website, Classmates, for several years, with not a lot of results. So, I am happy to have heard from John Ferrick, and hope you are doing well, John. I finally paid for the "gold" membership, and hope to find some more old friends. However, I feel there is common ground for all of us "Brats" -- Oh yes, I go to that site too, so will likely respond if anyone writes me a note. I wrote Donna Gonnella a note a short time ago; one to John Ferrick, and Ed Prendergast and one or two others. After leaving Munich High in January of 1951, I attended Nurnberg High until the end of my Freshman year. During the summer of '51 we moved to Heidelberg and I went to HHS all of my Sophomore year and started my Junior year there as well. I lived in the same apartment building where Bob Hess, Graham Stokes, and Myrla Colvin lived. We left for the USA just before my birthday and were "home" for Thanksgiving of 1952, stationed at Ft. Ord, CA. I finished my Junior year and graduated from Monterey High, Monterey, CA in 1954. I married DeVon Woodland from Idaho in November of that year (Wow -- 54 years ago) We have raised potatoes, sugar beets, alfalfa, beans, etc. We always have a garden and do a lot of home canning. We've been dairy farmers, had a band of sheep, and right now, we have a cow-calf operation -- in the process of turning it over to our youngest son. We served 19 months in Cambodia on a Humanitarian Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints -- December 01 to July 03. (the Mormons) Our children are: Charlene, Calvin, Russell, Janiel, Tamara, Dianne, Gale, Glenn, Wesley, and Ryan. We have 40+ grand children (includin...Expand for more
g the great-grands) It has been quite an exciting, yet 'peace filled' life and one full of great memories. And the only move we've made in all that time was 1/2 mile in distance from one old small Woodland family home to the larger one. In fact, my husband's grandfather homesteaded this place and the house we live in was 100 years old in March of 2008. However, my family really don't understand my young life and don't quite understand my fascination with trying to reach my old school friends. About a year ago, I found Carol McManaway in Pocatello, ID. not far from where we live. She was a mighty Senior when I was a Freshman, but I was happy to find her anyway. Somewhere out there, I know you're there Donna (Heine), Mary (Chambers), Polly (Davis), Gay (Burkett), and so many others . . . . . Love to all of you . . . . . Oh BTW there is going to be a Nurnberg reunion sometime this summer (2009) in Boise, ID and that's only a four hour drive from my front door. Maybe I'll see some of you there!? There are a lot of PS's I could add but will do more another day. Love and friendship to all of you, my friends. Dean Today is Sunday, 26 Oct 2014. I've been disappointed not to find Donna Heine (now Liebensberger) or Mary Chambers ( who lived in Lincoln, Nebraska last I knew) John Ferrick told me that Donna's sister, Judith, married Clyde (Bud) Crego and gave me an email address, but I was not able to reach them. There are probably not many of us left (I'm 78) . I send my best and most heartfelt loving wishes to all of you who I remember so fondly; and to all of you Military Brats who I don't even know because ours is a marvelous heritage. We are children of the greatest privilege. Again -- love to Donna, Mary, Polly, Sandra, Dacia, Sally . . . . . . . . . .Dean (Duncan) Woodland
